A standard for audio interface software drivers and programs that do hard disk recording on personal computers. It isolates the application software from the characteristics of different models of audio interface hardware; it also provides useful capabilities for minimizing timing variations. ASIO is the most popular standard for Windows systems; at one time it was also widely used on the Macintosh platform, prior to the introduction of OSX. However, when Apple introduced OSX, it included the Core Audio standard, which has replaced ASIO on Macs running OSX.
