A synthesizer specialized to produce bass sounds, and played with the feet, in the manner of organ pedals. (Some are arranged so that a performer who plays standing up, such as a guitarist, can play the pedals with one foot while standing on the other foot. Back in the day, Mike Rutherford of Genesis made a speciality out of this.) By far the best known example is the 1970s Moog Taurus, which contained a simple analog synthesizer tuned for bass notes, connected to a 1-1/2 octave pedalboard and foot-operated controls for selecting preset sounds or a programmed patch (set up by programming controls hid from wayward footsteps under a cover). Nowdays, it is more common to find pedalboards that generate MIDI messages for controlling an external synth.
