The act of transferring some or all of the contents of patch memory to some form of external storage. Early patch-memory-equipped synths in the 1980s included a cassette interface which allowed patch data to be dumped to, and loaded from, audio cassette tapes. However, this wasn't a terribly reliable form of storage, so in the late '80s, most synths switched to using floppy discs. Nowdays, the term "patch dump" usually refers to transferring patch data to a sequencer or computer, using MIDI system exclusive messages.
