A control signal that directly controls the phase, or time (as opposed to frequency) of an oscillating signal. In some of the more advanced soft synths, such as Csound, in the basic oscillator concept, the oscillator is not self-driving -- it requires a phasor input to drive it. The frequency of the phasor directly controls the frequency of the oscillator output, and phase modulation can easily be implemented by using different phasor waveforms. A hardware implementation of the phasor-driven oscillator concept also exists, in the form of the Miniwave.
