Progressive house

A style of house music whose relationship to "mainstream" house is somewhat analagous to the relationship between mainstream rock and progressive rock.  It began in the 1990s as some house producers began adding exploratory and experimental elements to their tracks.  There is some overlap between this style and trance, although progressive house is less likely to contain the crescendos and extended rhythm breaks that are features of trance, and also less likely to contain vocals.
