In modular synthesizers, a skiff is a small enclosure meant to accommodate usually 4 to 8 modules, perhaps with some storage space for patch cords. The skiff is intended to be small, portable, and lightweight. This is to facilitate taking the synth to live gigs, busking, and spur-of-the-moment performances. Many skiffs have limits on the depth of the modules they will accommodate, and the performer should take this into account when purchasing or planning the layout of a skiff.
