An electromechanical signal-generating device that uses a metal plate cut in the shape of a polyhedron or gear, and spun on a shaft. A magnetic pickup is mounted near the edge of the plate, and as the bumps and variations in the plate shape pass by, they induce a signal in the pickup. By far the best-known device employing tone wheels is the Hammond organ.
