A plug-in standard originally developed by Steinberg for its Cubase sequencer software, with specifications for both the Windows and Mac OSX systems. VST is currently the most widely supported plug-in format, either supported directly or via adaptor software for nearly all sequencer packages on the market today. Originally, VST only supported audio effect processors, but the 2.0 version of the standard added support for soft synth plug-ins.
